Mercy is a changemaker for gender equality. She wants to empower girls and learn them that they are not just 'another pretty face'. To do this she is going to organize weekly sessions for girls to boost their self esteem, to let them ask questions and discus the topic of gender equality. This is to learn them that their goal in life is more then to marry rich.

Highlights

Child participation
Karthik’s children’s manifest
What is the problem? Political parties in Karthik’s neighbourhood do not respect children’s rights. The needs of children are not taken into consideration and hardly any money is made available for this. The rights of children are just ignored. The right to education, for example, is only applicable to children up to and including 14 years old and child labour is allowed after this age. Karthik wants to increase the age to this right to 18 years old. What is Karthik’s solution? Karthik is going to gather 20 active and concerned children and youth in one group. Together they will make sure that the age is increased from 14 to 18 years old. The group will do this by presenting a manifest to local political parties. A manifest is a document containing a summary of clear statements which everyone can read. This manifest will be drawn up by a group of 20 children and youth. The themes child labour and education will be the key elements. Just before the elections, the youth group will meet the political parties to present the manifest personally. What is his goal? His goal will be achieved when Karthik’s community treats children with respect and political parties take children’s rights seriously. How does Karthik work? Karthik will coordinate and execute the project himself. He expects that it will be a challenge to reach the political parties before the elections. The parties will of course be busy with their campaigns. Together with the other youth he wants to plan an appropriate strategy for this. What does Karthik need? Advice from KidsRights Information on projects like his. Who does he need? Motivated children and youth who want to work with him on the manifest. Volunteers A local Indian organisation that will help him.
Gender Equality
Aisshwarya’s GIRLS = BOYS Clubs
What is the problem? Aisshwarya is noticing a lot of inequality around her. Girls are not treated the same as boys. They are seen as the weaker gender, and have less rights to for example education, health care, work and decision making. This image is created with children early on, and is therefore difficult to change. As a result, girls have less opportunities to develop and to choose their own future. Aisshwarya wants this to change. What is Aisshwarya’s solution? Aisshwarya is convinced that the image of girls can be changed by education and awareness. That is why she wants to inform children and parents, and make them aware of the rights of girls. She will do this via weekly awareness classes with boys and girls between 12 and 18 years old, in two villages. Next to that, she will organize an activity were not only children, but also parents will be present. They will do an exercise in which objects will be discussed related to gender: does this object remind you of a boy or a girl? These associations will be discussed and broken through. They will also make and spread posters together. These posters will illustrate the rights of girls. Last, Aisshwarya wants to set up GIRLS = BOYS Clubs, in which the rights of girls are being discussed. In all three activities, discrimination and the impact of this on girls is the main topic. The aim is to let both children as parents see that boys and girls have equal rights. What is her goal?   Making boys, girls, and parents listen would already be a success. Aisshwarya’s GIRLS = BOYS project will be present in two villages, when this is expanded to more villages, Aisshwarya has made a big step. How does Aisshwarya work?  Aisshwarya is leading her project, and is getting support in this from a local organization that is also fighting for young people. The theme Aisshwarya is going to discuss is a sensitive topic in her community. That is why she is curious what the response will be, but she is assuming it will be fine. With the teaching equipment, the approach, and her knowledge, she can hopefully convince the children and their parents. Who does Aisshwarya need?   Aisshwarya needs her friends and the local organization to support her with setting up the activities.
Environment
Kids CleanSUP
What’s the problem?   Dean’s company WhaSUP NL gives SUP (Stand Up Paddling) tours through Schiedam and the surrounding area. During these tours, he sees a lot of trash in the water. He wants to fight this pollution and has decided to take action! What’s Dean’s solution? Dean wants to teach children how to keep their environment clean and why it is important to do so. He also wants to help them lead a healthy life, with proper nutrition and plenty of exercise. This is why he has started Kids CleanSUP, a project where he takes groups of kids (age 8-16) to clean up the waters of Schiedam and surroundings while SUPing. The children are taught the basics of SUPing and receive a course book about keeping the environment clean, proper nutrition and exercise. The children get a free trial lesson, Dean hopes that they will like it and come back. What’s the goal? The goal is to keep the water clean. He also wants to give the kids a fun and active day and teach them about food, exercise, and trash. How does Dean work? First Dean will make a flyer to inform people about Kids CleanSUP. He will also develop the lessons. The information should be fun and interesting to the children. He will organize the trial lessons himself and keep contact with the children afterwards so that they will sign up for more lessons. Who does Dean need?   Partners to sponsor SUPs and teaching materials Children to participate in the lessons KidsRights to help him execute Kids CleanSUP What does Dean need?   Flyers Food and drinks Enough SUPs
