Child abuse
Karupuswamy’s parent meetings
What is the problem?  Karupuswamy sees too much emotional and/or physical abuse of children in his community. This are often parents hitting their children, to punish them when for example they have misbehaved. This form of abuse is seen as normal, as a result, no action is being taken against it. Children often don’t understand where the abuse is coming from, which can lead to confusion, insecurity, and stress. It has big consequences on the personal development of the children. What is Karupuswamy’s solution? Karupuswamy wants to educate parents about positive, and child friendly ways of punishing children when they have misbehaved. He also wants to open the discussion about the negative impact of the abuse that is currently used as a punishment. Parents often don’t know any better, their own parents raised them the same way. That is why it is important to show them that it is also possible to raise their children differently. Karupuswamy will organize weekly meetings with parents and their children, to look at the behavior of children and their needs. The other way around, he also wants to look at the behavior of parents and their expectations. In this way parents and children will learn to understand each other, so they can better adapt to each other. Next to that, he wants to organize a lecture for parents, in which they will learn more about positive and child friendly parenting. He wants to be supported with this by professionals, to make sure they can pass on enough knowledge together. What is the goal?  Karupuswamy’s goal will be achieved when parents will understand the negative consequences of violence against children, stop using it, and start raising their children in a more positive way. How does Karupuswamy work?  Karupuswamy is the project leader. He is starting his project by developing teaching material with his friends, like stickers and posters. He is curious about what the responses of the parents will be, as this has been a habit for years. Who does Karupuswamy need?   Young people that have the same opinion about violence against children as he does. Help of the local children’s rights organizations. Professionals that voluntarily want to help with passing on their knowledge. What does he need? A printer to print the teaching material.
Education
Victoria’s English classes
What is the problem? The quality of education at many schools in Columbia, is not as high as it should be. Many students are not being taught any foreign languages like English. While in fact, these are very important to the future of a child, for example when they want to apply for an university. What is Victoria’s solution? Victoria’s solution is to tutor children (age 8-12) in English. Her lessons focus on words and phrases that the children can use in daily life, like introducing themselves, describing objects and talking about family. Because Victoria wants to tutor as many children as possible, she will expand her team with two of her classmates. What is the goal? Victoria will reach her goal once she has inspired other children and youths to take action and help other children, for example by tutoring them as well. She is also hoping that her project will continue to grow and reach more and more children. How does Victoria work? Victoria writes the teaching materials, plans the classes, and guides her two friends in teaching their classes. She also teaches the classes herself. They take place every Sunday. She sees finding a suitable location as a challenge. What does Victoria need? ·       Teaching materials for the tutoring classes ·       A suitable location to teach the classes Who does Victoria need? ·       Her mother, who often helps her with her projects ·       Two friends will help her teach the classes ·       Her English teacher will help her write the teaching materials
Peace
Sibe's Youth Clubs for Peace
What is the problem? Sibe lives in Gokana, Nigeria. This town is home to a few groups that are constantly fighting with each other. They cause a lot of discrimination and violence in Sibe’s neighborhood. Children and adults get injured or even die. As a result, both children and adults live in fear, and are afraid to leave their houses. The groups in Sibe’s neighborhood try to recruit children so they will join the group. Therefore, the groups continue to exist, just like discrimination and violence. Sibe wants to end the discrimination and violence in his neighborhood and is taking action. What is Sibe’s solution? Sibe wants to establish clubs for young people, that collectively fight for peace and against the groups in the neighborhood. Each club has a young leader, who convinces the children to not join any of the groups. First, these leaders have to follow a training, in which they learn how to inform and motivate their peers to take action. The leaders meet weekly to discuss the progress they make. Next to that, Sibe wants to develop a program about gender equality and violence. This will teach children how to detect and understand the negative consequences of the groups’ actions. The aim is that this will lead to a decrease in the amount of children that join any of the violent groups, and an increase in the amount of children that want to fight for peace and are aware of their rights. What is the goal? Sibe’s goal is to take action for peace with as many children as possible. He wants to start with reaching and convincing 50 children below 13 years old. How does Sibe work? Sibe’s hometown is divided into 17 communities. Eventually, he wants to reach all of them, but he is going to start with one. He will lead the project himself and will look for children that can help him. He would also like to work together with local organizations that can support his goal. What does Sibe need? He needs teaching material such as informative picture (infographics) for the trainings and the program. Besides that, Sibe needs pens, paper and pencils. Who does he need? Local organizations to support his activities and getting useful information. Members for the clubs for young people. Young leaders to support him and lead the clubs for young people
