Education

Education

Getting an education means that you are going to school and you are learning. Education is a right for children. It is a right that also helps enjoy other rights. Second, education is a tool of empowerment, a means to promote children rights, and can provide individuals with the necessary skills to have the best possible life. Quality education must be available for every child, without any discrimination and respecting their dignity, no matter who they are, regardless of their race, gender or disability; if they’re in detention, or if they’re a refugee.

Primary education must be both free and compulsory, while secondary school must be available and accessible to every child. All children and young people should be encouraged to reach the highest level of education of which they are capable.

  • Children’s rights: art 27, 28, 29 and 32 UN CRC:  Children have the right to get an education, primary school should be provided for free.
  • Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 4

What is the problem with education?
Still for a lot of children their right to education is violated, which means that they don’t go to school at all, they don’t get quality education or it is not free. Let’s have a look at some facts:

  • 1 out of 6 adolescents is not in school, totaling 65 million.
  • In the majority of countries worldwide, young men are more likely than young women to enroll in vocational education.
  • Worldwide, 103 million young people (ages 15–24) are illiterate.

There are some categories that particularly suffer violations of their right to education. These are: poorer children, girls, working children, children in emergencies, the disabled, and those with nomadic lifestyles.

Why is education important?
Education is fundamental to help children develop their full potential, and there should be schools for every child, taking into account their needs and age. Basic education in primary schools not only needs to give you skills in for example math, reading and writing, but also in socio-emotional skills, like making friends and working together. Education is the most important tool to combat poverty, because educated children are less likely to end up in poverty.  Harmful practices like child marriage and child labor are a barrier to many children’s right to education.   Without education we cannot properly understand the world around us and fight for the changes that could make it into something better. Education helps us build opinions and have critical views on things in life. Education is knowledge, and knowledge is power.

What can you do for education?

  • Check your schoolmates
Go to the head of the school and ask if you can get a list of people who dropped out, visit them and see why they are no longer going to school. Make a plan so that they can go back to school again.
  • Help children become better
Do a lot of children have trouble with reading or English or another subject at school? Tutor them yourself, or organize a group of youth that can help these children to get better at school.
  • Advocate
Is your primary school not free? Is going to school dangerous because children have to walk alongside a busy road? Are their any other obstacles for children to go to school? Go to the principle of the school or to the municipality or who ever is in charge and make them aware of the problems and let them know that the children have the right to go to school!
